Tyger marching band at work on second show

The Senior High Marching Tygers participated in Mansfield’s Labor Day parade on Sept. 1.

The Mansfield Senior High School T-Y Tyger Marching Band will repeat its tribute to The Beatles Friday night but already is at work on a second show.

The band’s Beatles show, marking the 50th anniversary of the British group’s arrival in the United States, was presented at the Tygers’ football game Aug. 29 at Big Walnut and again last week at the home opener against Lima Senior.

“We’ll do the Beatles show again this week at home (vs. Marion Harding) and probably the next two road games (Clear Fork Sept. 19 and Orrville Sept. 26),” said band director Jeff Freytag.

“We started work Monday on our next show. I suppose you could call it vintage rock – music from Jimi Hendrix, Aerowsmith and Bon Jovi. It will span a few decades.”

The band prepared for its marching season during indoor rehearsals and outdoor drills several weeks before the start of school.

After the final football game of the season on Oct. 31 at Madison the band will have two more marching dates – Mansfield’s Veterans Day parade and the city’s annual Holiday Parade. The band participated in the Labor Day parade on Sept. 1.

“They’re a good group of kids,” Freytag said of the band members. “They’re easy to work with.”

The band’s indoor season will include holiday and spring concerts in the Senior High auditorium and the annual district solo and ensemble competitions in late January at Senior High. The pep band will perform at basketball games.

Charles Bradley is the assistant band director.
