Ex-Marine Mark Boggs begins work as school resource officer

Mark Boggs talks with former resource officer J. Mark Perry, right, now a detective with the Mansfield City Police Department, and Officer Orlando Chatman Jr., the department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer.

Mansfield City Police Officer Mark Boggs began his new role Monday as the resource officer at Mansfield Senior High and Mansfield Middle School.

He succeeds J. Mark Perry, who has joined the department’s detective division. Perry had been the schools’ resource officer for 4 1/2 years.

“I plan to interact with students and staff any way I can to maintain a safe and positive environment,” said Boggs, who served two tours of duty in Iraq with the U.S. Marine Corps. “My approach will be to identify potential problems early on, but I want students to know they can come up and talk to me anytime.”

When he isn’t in the hallways or commons area, Boggs will work from a second-floor office where he can monitor the network of security cameras and complete reports.

In October 2017 Boggs responded to MPD Sgt. Patrick Williams’ call for other officers to join him in reading to the district’s youngest students. He and Williams read Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” to kindergarten children at Woodland Elementary School.

Boggs attended Mansfield City Schools until his sophomore year when he transferred to Madison. His seven years of active duty with the Marine Corps included training Iraqi police officers.

A former city probation officer, Boggs has been a member of the Mansfield City Police Department for 2 1/2 years.
