Regina
Sackman, principal of Springmill STEM Elementary, displays the Tyger Cub
Tickets that provide free admission to Mansfield Senior High sporting events.
Looking on from left are Dr. Holly Christie, district director of student
support programs, and second-grade teachers Melissa Vogt and Jan Weithman. Thanks to the generosity of a father and son, students in grades 2 through 8 can earn free passes to Mansfield Senior High fall sports.
Each Tyger
Cub Ticket provides admission for a student and two adults.
The donation
was made by E. Deming Miller of Columbus, a 1999 Senior High graduate, and his
father, local attorney Eric Miller.
“The purpose of the donation is to provide current Mansfield City Schools students with the opportunity to get out and support their high school sports teams,” Deming Miller said in a letter that accompanied the donation.
“Our intentions are to encourage support for Mansfield Senior High athletes and give back to the school system that helped me set myself up for success.”
Dr. Holly Christie, director of student support programs, expressed the district’s gratitude and said each school will set the criteria for awarding the passes.
“It may be a student’s high interest in sports, positive behavior, good classroom work or any combination of factors,” Dr. Christie said.
Deming Miller credited retired teacher Debbie Stull “for doing all the legwork” to help implement the free-passes initiative.
After graduating from Senior High, Deming Miller went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. He is employed in finance in Columbus.
“My father and I each contributed part of this donation,” he said. “We are big supporters of Mansfield City Schools. We think the district is doing a great job. We just wanted to do this to help kids.”
