Dr. Ryan
Hourigan of Ball State University will offer strategies for working with
students with autism when he meets with local teachers Oct. 31 at the Mansfield Art Center. The 4:30-7:30 p.m. workshop is part of the teaching artist series of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Dr. Hourigan’s presentation is titled “Reaching students with autism through the arts: implications for inclusive arts classrooms.”
Many teachers
have noticed an increase in the number of students on the autism spectrum
included in their classrooms. At the Oct. 31 session participants will explore questions
about what autism is, how it affects people and how some strategies are utilized
to help students with autism learn and experience the arts.
Dr.
Hourigan, associate director of the School of Music at Ball State University,
addresses communication, emotional, socialization, cognitive and sensory
challenges faced when working with students with autism in music, art, theater
and dance classrooms.
The free
program, which includes dinner, provides three contact hours toward CEU credit.
