Huge crowd for Malaboo dinner, creepy crawly classroom visits

All manner of costumed characters came through the dinner serving lines at Malaboo.

Malaboo Math and Literacy Night lived up to its reputation again Thursday evening as the biggest evening of the year at Malabar Intermediate School.

Hundreds of students and their families, many in Halloween costumes, packed the school for the annual dinner, classroom activities and prize drawings.

“This is a great opportunity for families to be engaged with their children and see what we’re doing here at Malabar,” said principal Tom Hager, clad in his traditional Scooby Doo costume.

“It’s a big night for all of us.”

Dinner was anchored by huge crockpots filled with Johnny Marzetti and chicken and noodles prepared by Diane Milano of AMVETS Post 26 in Mansfield.

The school’s planetarium was open for star gazing and the Ohio Bird Sanctuary presented a live “Owl Encounter” in the library. No less than 14 classroom activities were offered, designed to be both fun and educational. Examples, as described in the evening’s program, included:

-- Roll-a-Spooky-Story, with teacher Lisa Foley. “Roll a die to find the characters, setting and problem of your family’s spooky story and then work together to write a frightfully spooky tale.”

-- Partial Quotient Division with teacher Don Walter. “Stop by Mr. Walter’s room to gain experience in one of the most frightening things about math … Partial Quotient Division! Parents will learn how to do this so they can better help their kids, learn why we do it this way and help answer spooky story problems with their children.”

-- Candy Corn Tower Challenge with teacher Zach Brumfield. “Students will build a free-standing structure using toothpicks and candy corn.”

-- Measuring Bats, Spiders & Ghosts with teachers Donna Calderhead and Ann Savage. “Come and measure some creepy crawly Halloween creatures. We will be measuring in both inches and centimeters and compare and discuss what we notice.”

The evening concluded with drawings for gift cards from Whit’s Frozen Custard and Subway and three frozen turkeys.
