Tygers, Cubs will read to kids Monday at the Richland Carrousel

Members of two football teams – the Mansfield Senior High Tygers and the Lucas High School Cubs – will read to children on Monday, Feb. 17, at the Richland Carrousel in downtown Mansfield.

The Big Red Bookshelf event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. also will feature free pizza and free carrousel rides.

Each child will receive a free book.

The Tygers were runner-up in the Div. III state championship game in December, while the Cubs were runner-up in the Div. VII championship game.

The Big Red Bookshelf project provides new or gently-used books to children up to third grade in locations throughout Richland County where families with young children visit.

The donated books are placed on bright red bookshelves built by volunteers and distributed to children who need them free of charge.

Books placed on the shelves have been donated by businesses and community members. The United Way says this is a great opportunity for churches, businesses, civic organizations, schools, etc. to get involved in the community by helping children appreciate the love of reading.

Anyoone interested in hosting a book drive may contact the United Way office at 419-525-2816.

More than 12,000 books have been distributed since February 25, 2013.

Bookshelf locations are:

Lucas Community Center

Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Dept. – WIC Office

Mansfield YMCA – Fran’s Daycare

Oak Wood Crossing
