Mehock Relays’ Success an Opportunity for Growth and a New Generation

Pleasant weather ushered in the first Mehock Relays since 2019 on Saturday, April 17, 2021.

This year’s event welcomed 21 hired officials and an additional 30 volunteers to assist with management of events, setup and teardown, as well as guiding participants and spectators. Meet Director Shannon Sprang was impressed with the logistics of the day, noting that events ran smoothly - a testament to the assistance of the experienced individuals who were on-site. It is estimated that there were over 300 spectators present.

One of Sprang’s goals for next year is to expand the event to include 24 teams, adding more each year thereafter.

“The goal is always to grow and improve,” she said.

The rebirth of the event invites a new generation of spectators and participants to experience what Mehock has to offer. Boasting a nearly 90-year history, Sprang notes she would like to also see the involvement of younger community members. This can be accomplished through group participation including school clubs and organizations.

Planning for next year’s Mehock Relays is already underway. For more information on how to donate, sponsor or volunteer, contact Sprang at [email protected]
