TEAM ORANGE

All subjects- Ms. Foley

Hello! I’m Lisa Foley and I teach 5th grade at Malabar. This is my ninth year teaching at Malabar, and I have come to love the school and Mansfield. I grew up in Tiffin, Ohio, which is about an hour away. I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Heidelberg College in Tiffin. I am licensed to teach math, science, and reading for grades 4-9, and social studies and language arts for grades 4-6 which allows me to be a self- contained 5th grade teacher. I have a Masters Degree from Walden University in the field of Integrating Technology in the Classroom. I enjoy making a lasting impact on my student’s lives.

Some of my interests include gardening, reading and spending time with my three children. I have two dogs; Tucker is a miniature Dachshund, and Ella is a Jack Russell terrier.

TEAM BROWN

English Language Arts- Mrs. Whaley

I am Mrs. Whaley, one of the 5th grade Language Arts teachers.  I have been teaching for 21 years. I spent 1 year subbing in Shelby City Schools, and for 20 years I have been a part of the Mansfield City School. I have taught kindergarten, first grade, a year of eighth grade, and now 5th grade.

I got my bachelor’s and master’s degree at The Ohio State University.  I can teach all subjects in kindergarten through eighth grade. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I love seeing the joy in my student’s faces when they learn something new.

I was born in Mansfield, but graduated from Shelby High School in 1993. I played the clarinet in high school and marched in the Electrical parade at the Magic Kingdom when I was a Freshman. That is when my love of Disney began.  I love spoiling and spending time with my two nephews, traveling with my family, watching Ohio State football, and relaxing at home.

Math- Mrs. Stoyko

Hi! My name is Mrs. Stoyko.  I am a 5th grade Math teacher at Malabar.  I have been teaching in the Mansfield City Schools for 29 years.  I graduated from Lexington High School and Bowling Green State University.  I have also taught Extended Day Kindergarten, Reading Recovery, Kindergarten and First grade.  I have taught at Carpenter, Sherman, Woodland, Brinkerhoff and here at Malabar. I love teaching Math!

I am married to my husband David.  We have 3 daughters. The oldest is in graduate school to become an Occupational Therapist.  The middle daughter just graduated from Bowling Green State University and is a nurse. The youngest is a junior at Bowling Green State University majoring in nursing.  We have 3 dogs.  Chloe is our older dog and we got two puppies in March that are sisters named Emmie and Callie.

In my spare time I love to read, shop and spend time with my family. Our favorite place to go on vacation is Sanibel Island.

Science and Social Studies- Mrs. Pohlabel

Hi! I’m Shannon Pohlabel and I teach 5th grade social studies and science. I grew up in the rural village of Lucas and graduated in 1995. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Ashland University in 2001. In that same year I began my teaching career for Mansfield City Schools. I have taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and a 4/5 split class.  Over the years, I have taught at Newman, Hedges, Prospect, Springmill, and Malabar. Teaching science is my favorite subject!

I am married to my husband Dave of 22 years, and have two silly children, Nick, who is a freshman in high school and Julia who is a 3rd grader.

In my spare time I love gardening, being out in nature, spending time with family, decorating, and trying new foods.

I feel very honored to be a TYger of over 20 years  and love working with the students and staff of Malabar!

Intervention Specialist- Mrs. Curtis

Lisa Curtis has been teaching in the Mansfield City Schools for the past 15years and will begin her 31st year teaching in the fall of 2021.  Currently, she is a 5th-grade Intervention Specialist at Malabar.  She’s taught students in all grades from 4th to 12th.  Not only has Ms. Curtis worked as a special-education teacher, but also as a regular-education teacher at the middle-school level.  She graduated from Walsh College and Ashland University.  Lisa is a proud mom of two talented, extraordinary kids; a son & a daughter.  She was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA.  When not teaching, her favorite place to be is her home in Mansfield or at her cabin near the Allegheny National Forest.  Ms. Curtis has a cat and a dog and is trying to adopt another dog because she just loves her furry friends!  For fun, she enjoys doing things outside like gardening, hiking, biking & geo-caching or quiet things indoors like reading & listening to music.  Most people who know Lisa describe her as out-going, but she’s really a very introverted person.  According to Ms. Curtis, the best students to teach are 5th-graders.  She’s very much looking forward to another great year at Malabar Intermediate School.

TEAM TYGERS

English Language Arts- Miss Nicol

I am Miss Nicol, one of the 5th grade Language Arts teachers.  I have been teaching for 13 years and taught every grade from 4th grade to 8th grade.  After college, I was a substitute teacher where I taught everything from Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Before coming to Mansfield, I spent 7 years teaching at charter schools in Columbus, Ohio, and then moved to Mansfield City schools where I have been for the last several years. I have taught 4th and 5th grade at Malabar.

I received my Bachelors Degree in Middle Childhood Education from Bowling Green State University and then returned there to get my Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement. I loved school as a kid, so I love teaching everything! I have plans to get my Masters Degree, but am trying to narrow down which area I want to focus in.

I grew up in Marysville, Ohio, which is home to many things, but most notably the Honda Plant and Scotts Miracle-Gro plant.  Outside of school, I enjoy crocheting, painting, puzzles, diamond painting, and reading. I also like tending to my flowers and boat rides on my family’s boat.

Math- Mr. Walter

Hello, my name is Mr. Walter.  I attended Mansfield City Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, and have been teaching in the district for 25 years!  I am currently teaching 5th grade math, and I love it!  I really like to challenge students to think creatively, or “outside the box.”  I use this when teaching math, and some sprinkled in logic and problem solving.  I consider myself the “funny” teacher.

My wife teaches music in Mansfield City Schools, and I have 4 children that attend, or have attended our fine district.  In my spare time, I coach 3 soccer teams.  I enjoy exercising, drawing, and watching football (Go Browns!).

Science and Social Studies- Miss Williams

Hello! I am Natalie Williams and I teach 5th grade at Malabar.

I graduated from The Ohio State University at Mansfield in 2014 with my Master’s Degree in education. I am certified to teach all subjects in grades 4, 5, and 6. I am also certified to teach math and science to grades 7, 8, and 9. This year begins my 8th year of teaching and 6th year with Mansfield City Schools. I love working here!

I live in Mansfield with my boyfriend Brandon, daughter Addison, and cat Bella. We like taking walks and riding bikes through our neighborhood. We love visiting Lake Erie and seeing new places, trying new food, and swimming. We got our own pool last summer and spent a ton of time in it! I also love to play board games and spend time with friends and family.

Intervention Specialist- Mrs. Yoder

Hello! I am a 5th grade Intervention Specialist at Malabar. I’ve been working at Malabar since 2012. I received my undergraduate degree from Capital University in Columbus and my masters degree in special education from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. I love teaching in 5th grade. My favorite part about being a teacher is seeing a student work really hard and finally find success.

I was born here in Mansfield, Ohio. I love spending time with my parents and their big dog Maddie! I also have a younger brother who has blessed me with 2 wonderful baby nephews that I enjoy getting to spoil.

I just got married last summer! My husband is a computer programmer. We love to go hiking and travel all over the US. Before getting married I traveled a lot too. I have been to 8 countries and 16 states here in the US. On my next trip I’m hoping to visit the American Southwest. I would love to see the Native American cliff dwellings. I’m also really excited to go to Africa for the first time to visit and work at an orphanage. My favorite thing to do at home is lay in my hammock in the garden and read a good book. Check out my website to learn more about me!
