Mansfield Senior High cosmetology students continued their dominance at the recent Beauty School Student Competition sponsored by the Ohio Association of Beauticians, Inc.

Last year the Tyger group returned from Columbus with 10 trophies and 13 medals.

This year the Senior High contingent earned the most awards among 300 competitors from 14 high schools and professional beauty schools.

“I am so proud of these awesome students,” cosmetology instructor Crystal Weese said. “On the morning of the competition (Nov. 24) they were here at Senior High at 4:30 getting ready to head to Columbus. I arrived at 4:33 a.m. and they said, ‘Hey, you’re late!’”

Junior De’Erica Crawford received the huge first-place trophy for her fantasy mannequin, a category that drew 87 contestants. Senior High took five of the eight awards.

“I didn’t think I was going to win. I was working on my entry up until the last minute,” Crawford said. “I’m still in shock.”

Other fantasy mannequin winners from Mansfield included Autumn Olar, second; Joyleah Odem, fourth; Aerial McBride, sixth and Adanelia Covington, eighth.

Senior Brittany Goolsby won the first-place trophy in the bridal competition. Her model was Aerial McBride. Goolsby had 55 minutes to style McBride’s hair, color her fingernails and complete the entire presentation.

   “I was confident,” Goolsby said.

Only four awards were made in the bridal category. Tierra McClain of Senior High placed third; Mariaha Funk was her model.

The Tyger team received two of the four awards given in the Mohawk avent garde competition. Aveona Hatten placed second and Brooklyn Dean fourth.
