Sherman Elementary School third-graders wore new bright orange “leadership group” T-shirts and reindeer antlers for their visit to Dayspring Assisted Living.

The annual visit to Dayspring Assisted Living by Sherman Elementary School third-graders may be the most appreciated holiday celebration in Richland County.

Residents of the Olivesburg Road facility filled the dining room Friday morning to clap and sing along with 31 members of Sherman’s third-grade leadership group.

“The residents started coming down to the dining room before the kids arrived,” said activities director Amy Clark. “They enjoy this so much. They’re always excited to see the kids.”

Sherman students lined the walls on two sides of the dining room to sing a variety of holiday songs, including “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” “Let It Snow,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Residents laughed and clapped as the third-graders sang “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.”

Teacher Kevin Stone and guidance counselor Linda Zakrajsek accompanied the students, just as they have for several years of the holiday visits.

Zakrajsek said the third-graders worked for weeks to make Christmas decorations and bags of candy that they distributed Friday morning. The kids sold potato chips during lunches to raise funds for their project.

The leadership group is comprised of students nominated by their teachers based on their classroom work, behavior and character.

After singing and distributing their gifts, the Sherman kids sat with residents to enjoy soft drinks and potato chips provided by Graham Auto Mall.

The third-graders will return to Dayspring three more times during the school year for celebrations around Valentine’s Day and Easter and a cookout near the end of school.
