Mentors needed to help Sherman students

Adult volunteers willing to donate 30 minutes each week are needed to tutor Sherman Elementary School students who will benefit from extra help.

HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) is a language arts mentoring program for second- and third-graders who have begun to struggle in their classrooms.

The half-hour sessions are divided into 10-minute segments each for student reading to the mentor, writing and spelling words.

“All the needed materials are provided, except you. We need you,” HOSTS coordinator Sharon Fesmier said in appealing for volunteers. “We need someone who will listen to a child read, someone who will listen to their stories and help them to put them on paper, someone who will ask them their spelling words and smile when they get them right.

“Essentially, we need someone who cares to be a mentor because you want that child to become more self-reliant and more confident.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for the HOSTS program may contact Fesmier at 419-566-1370 or by email at [email protected].
