Board OKs teachers for Sherman, middle school

The Mansfield City Schools Board of Education approved the reinstatement of four teaching positions Tuesday night.

Acting on the recommendation of Superintendent Brian Garverick, the board authorized:

-- A kindergarten teacher and a second-grade teacher at Sherman Elementary School.

-- A social studies teacher and a science teacher at Mansfield Middle School.

“These positions are needed to reduce class sizes,” Garverick said.

He noted that Sherman’s enrollment has swelled to approximately 640 this year, due in part to the closing of Newman Elementary School and a local charter school.

At the middle school, Garverick said, classes as large as 37 students dictated the need to add the social studies and science positions.

Dozens of teaching positions were cut last spring when the state-appointed Financial Planning and Supervision Commission – created in response to the district’s fiscal emergency status – developed a financial recovery plan for the district. The plan was approved by the Ohio Department of Education on May 2.

The commission will consider the reinstatement of the four teaching positions when it meets at 4 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Raemelton.

In other action, the board approved a $4,700 contract with Hull & Associates to provide an analysis of the construction debris at the former Simpson school site at Fourth and Bowman streets. The company will work with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to develop a plan for completing excavation of the property.

Last month, the board terminated an agreement with Deer Creek Excavating of Bellville, citing the company’s failure to meet timelines for completion of the Simpson work.
