A student attired in a Star Wars costume was a hit during Math Madness in the Spanish Immersion gym.
Mansfield City Schools’ Spanish Immersion School welcomed a large crowd to its Math Madness Family Night on Thursday.
Parents and grandparents of students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade participated. Many of the children were in costumes.
“We had a really large turnout, including a lot of pre-kindergarten parents,” said Principal Gabe Costa.
Pre-kindergarten classes are not part of the immersion program but are housed in the school at 240 Euclid Avenue
“Our teachers and Key Club volunteers operated hands-on math activity stations around the gym. The parents and kids had a lot of fun rotating through them,” Costa said. “Parents were a big help in breaking down the displays afterward and cleaning up.”
Spanish Immersion’s recent state report card was explained in a display.
In the cafeteria visitors munched on mummy hot dog fingers and worm dirt pudding.
“The culinary arts department at Senior High sent over pumpkin cookies, which was really nice,” Costa said. “Monster punch – lemonade, food coloring and dry ice – was a big hit.”
Enrollment for 2016-17 in Mansfield City Schools’ pre-kindergarten program is under way. Earlier this year the program earned a five-star rating – the highest possible – from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
Step Up To Quality is a voluntary quality rating system which recognizes and promotes learning and development programs that meet quality benchmarks over and above minimum health, safety and educational licensing standards. Ratings range from zero to five stars.
