137 registered for math camp at Springmill

Teachers were in several classrooms at Springmill Learning Center Thursday preparing lesson plans for next week’s district math camp.

“Going buggy over math” will be the theme of Mansfield City Schools’ annual math camp July 13-17 at Springmill Learning Center.

One hundred and thirty-seven children who just completed kindergarten through fifth grade are registered for the free daily program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be provided, as will bus transportation for those who requested it.

“We want it to be a learning week but also a fun week, so we decided on the ‘Going buggy over math’ theme,” said Meg Strong, a MCS teacher on leave to coordinate Springmill for Ohio State University-Mansfield.

“Activities will be centered on number sense and algebraic thinking. We will be indoors and outdoors as much as the weather permits.

The district’s math teacher leaders planned the camp. Eleven MCS teachers will provide the instruction, assisted by 10 OSU students. Five high school students in the Young Peoples Project, part of the Algebra Project, also will help.

There will be two classes each for kindergarten through third grade, and one class each for fourth and fifth grades.

“We want to keep the class numbers as small as possible to provide more individual instruction,” Strong said. “Also, we will have 23 teachers from Mansfield City Schools and Lucas Local Schools who will observe classroom activities throughout the week as part of professional development training.”

All children who attend will receive camp T-shirts.

Camp teachers include Heather Dillon, Doreen Givens, Melissa Johnson, Allyson Leedy, Veronica Williams-Payne, Brianna Cassidy, Wendy Doup, Randi Hauger, Tricia Kehl, Beth Steiner and Morgan Guthrie.

Operation of Springmill Learning Center is a partnership between Mansfield City Schools and OSU-Mansfield.
