School year set to begin a week earlier

The school year would start earlier and end earlier in 2015-16 and 2016-17 in proposed calendars presented to the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education Tuesday evening.

The board is expected to adopt the calendars at its March 17 meeting.

Students would start school on Aug. 19, 2015; their last scheduled day would be May 26, 2016. For the 2016-17 school year, the first day of classes would be Aug. 17 and the last day for students would be May 25.

“Each year we would end the first semester before winter break,” Superintendent Brian Garverick said. “That is a huge gain. January weather often interrupts exam schedules.”

The first semester would end on Dec. 18, 2015. The following year it would end on Dec. 16.

This year, the first semester ended on Jan. 16. Severe weather forced the closing of schools on Jan. 6, 8, 9 and 12.

For 2015-16, winter break would be Dec. 21-Jan. 1, while spring break would be March 25-April 1. In 2016-17, winter break would be Dec. 19-Jan. 2 and spring break would be April 14-21.

The calendars were developed by a committee of administrators and the Mansfield School Employees Association.
