Sherman busy with food drive, plans for Wild West book fair

Students in Kevin Stone’s third-grade classroom join the entire school in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to begin the day. Some of Stone’s other students are not in the picture.

There’s lots of activity this month at Sherman Elementary School, including a food collection and a book fair.

Members of the third-grade leadership team are actively collecting non-perishable items for Richland County’s annual Make A Difference Day food drive.

“Our goal is 1,200 cans of food. We probably have between 400 and 450 now,” teacher Kevin Stone said earlier this week. “We ask each room to put any donations in the hallway early in the morning. A couple of our kids take a wagon and go around to collect them.”

Donated canned and boxed food is displayed on a table outside the cafeteria.

Later this month the Sherman collection will be taken to Graham Auto Mall where all contributed food will be assembled for distribution to non-profit outlets.

Sherman’s Wild West Scholastic Book Fair will be Oct. 23-27, librarian Robin Burkhardt said. Daily hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but the fair will be open until 7 p.m. during parent-teacher conferences on Oct. 24.

In preparation for the book fair, students are encouraged to participate in special days next week:

Monday, Oct. 16 – Cowboy hat day. Wear your favorite hat.

Tuesday, Oct. 17 – Western kerchief day. Wear your favorite scarf.

   Wednesday, Oct. 18 – Checker/plaid shirt day.

Thursday, Oct. 19 – Cowboy boot day. Wear your favorite boots.

Friday, Oct. 20 – Bring your favorite stuffed animal. (Stuffed ONLY!)

The class which has the most participation each day will win a class book from the book fair, Burkhardt said.
