Senior High well represented at Ohio SkillsUSA conference

This delegation of Career Tech students represented Mansfield Senior High at the Ohio SkillsUSA Leadership Fall Conference.

Sixteen students from Mansfield Senior High School’s Career Tech Education program participated in the Nov. 8-9 Ohio SkillsUSA Leadership Fall Conference in Columbus.

They were joined by Scott Musser, CTE director, and Dirk Eachus, Senior High’s Skills USA chapter advisor.

“Our students are excited and empowered after the two-day event. I have several students who want to run for state and regional offices next year,” Musser said.

SkillsUSA’s mission statement says that the organization “empowers its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens. SkillsUSA improves the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce through the development of framework skills that include personal, workplace and technical skills ground in academics.”

Nationally, SkillsUSA serves more than 335,000 students and instructors.

Musser said Senior High students attended a series of sessions focused on parliamentary procedure, leadership within organizations, public relations and professional image. The keynote dinner speaker was Adrian McLemore, a former SkillsUSA member who, against all odds, rose out of the foster care system and used SkillsUSA to catapult him to college and to found several nonprofit organziations.

Thursday evening’s program concluded with the annual SkillsUSA dance for 1,200 students from throughout Ohio.

“We also have Senior High students who are hoping to attend a leadership summer camp at Oho State University in July,” Musser said. “It is amazing to see the students rise up and be leaders at a state level. It is a good day to be a Tyger.”

Senior High students at last week’s conference included Zamir Taylor, Mya Bradley, Zenobia Williams, Jacquelyn Barler, Savanna Yeater, Paul-Michael Wiggins, Gavin Hyland-Spencer, Manny Bronson, Drake Hill, DaShawn Haney, Josh Lyons, Faith Lyons, Sarah Wayman, Destiny Rutter, Trevor Gossard and Khyra Johnson.
