Good behavior has its reward at Sherman Elementary School

Sherman Elementary students enjoy games of corn hole in the school's gymnasium.
Fun – and plenty of it – was the order of the day Friday morning at Sherman Elementary School.

Students in kindergarten through third grades enjoyed a variety of games and other activities as a reward for their good behavior. Many wore their pajamas to school, with permission of course.

“We met our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports) goals. Good behavior was up again in the second quarter and there were fewer student referrals to the office,” said assistant principal Amy Bradley. “The students earned this reward.”

A floor-to-ceiling curtain divided the gym where kids played corn hole on one side and ran relay races on the other. Laughter and shouts of excitement echoed into the hallway, where other students – facing each other in two lines – took turns hopping through hula hoops on the floor to meet in the middle for a game of rock-paper-scissors.

In nearby rooms students played board games while others colored holiday decorations.

The morning activity involved several parents. They and others who arrived later joined Sherman administrators and teachers for the school’s annual Title 1 meeting to discuss such topics as reading support and volunteer opportunities.

The day culminated with Sherman’s holiday concert in the gym.

Bradley said students’ good behavior in the first quarter earned a Hollywood movie day. Continued positive behavior will earn them a dance party at the end of the third quarter and field day with a cookout at the end of the final quarter.

Principal Michael Brennan mingled among students, asking if they were having fun. The repeated response was a resounding “Yes!”

“Kids need days like this as part of their elementary school experience,” Brennan said. “None of us remembers a third-grade math test but we all remember days like this.”
