Woodland third-grader emerges as top speller

McKenzie Musgrove received an Amazon Kindle, a trophy and a party for her Woodland Elementary class after winning Thursday’s spelling bee.

A girl from Woodland Elementary School is the winner of the first Third Grade Spelling Bee sponsored by the North End Community Improvement Collaborative and Mansfield City Schools.

McKenzie Musgrove emerged as champion Thursday afternoon by spelling “chimneys” correctly.

Woodland third-grader Trevor Grimes finished as runner-up.

More than 80 students from 10 elementary schools participated at Mansfield Senior High School. Children qualified for the bee through spelling tests in their classrooms.

Spellers were divided into three groups from which 26 moved on to the semifinals. That group was narrowed to 10, then to three.
All participants received gift bags and certificates. The top three received trophies for themselves and their schools.

Musgrove also received an Amazon Kindle and earned a party for her class.

Participating schools included Saint Mary of the Snows Catholic School, St. Peter’s, Woodland, Mansfield Spanish Immersion, Mansfield Seventh Day Adventist Christian School, Foundation Academy, Madison South, Discovery School, Prospect and Sherman.

Linda Burrage was coordinator of the bee.
