Malabar will begin with fourth-grade orientation on Thursday

Stephen Rizzo, Mansfield City Schools’ chief academic officer, meets with Malabar’s Building Leadership Team Monday morning to discuss the upcoming school year.

The faces will be new but the message will be familiar Thursday evening when Malabar Intermediate School welcomes students and their families to fourth-grade orientation for 2018-19. Classes will begin Aug. 23.

“We will emphasize safety, academics and respect for others, as well as our expectations of students,” Principal Andrea Moyer said.

The 5:30 to 7 p.m. program will begin with a gathering in the cafeteria during which Moyer and Assistant Principal Tom Hager will discuss the year ahead. Malabar teachers will be introduced before leading tours of the building.

Approximately 250 students – last year’s third-graders at Prospect, Sherman and Woodland elementary schools, as well as students new to the district – are expected to make up Malabar’s new fourth-grade class.

An open house for fifth- and sixth-graders and their families is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Malabar ended the 2017-18 school year with an enrollment of 783.

Incoming fourth-grade families will learn that safety features include security cameras inside and out and an audio/camera system which allows the office to identify visitors before they are admitted to the building. Students are accompanied by a teacher when they move single-file through the hallways.

In a letter to families on the Malabar web site, Moyer and Hager urge parents and guardians to assure that students get plenty of rest and arrive at school by 8 a.m.

“Our staff will use strategies to create a positive culture in the classroom and throughout the building where students feel safe to learn,” Moyer and Hager said.

“The Malabar staff will continue to focus on safety, academics and respect. We will promote positive behavior and celebrate each child who has demonstrated core values that we teach every day. Every student will practice respectful and responsible behavior. The staff at Malabar are determined to provide your child with a caring, safe and challenging education.”
