Second annual Third Grade Spelling Bee set for Thursday

Woodland Elementary School third-grader McKenzie Musgrove won last year’s inaugural spelling bee. She received an Amazon Kindle, a trophy and a party for her class.

Eleven schools will participate in the second annual Mansfield Third-Grade Spelling Bee on Thursday, Feb. 15, in the Mansfield Senior High School auditorium.

One hundred and twenty-two students are registered for the bee, sponsored by Mansfield City Schools and North Central State College.

Participating schools include Sherman Elementary, Spanish Immersion School, St. Peter’s, Foundation Academy, Woodland Elementary, Prospect Elementary, Madison South Elementary, St. Mary’s Parish/School, Mansfield Seventh-Day Adventist Christian School, Mifflin Elementary and Eastview Elementary.

The bee will begin with a 2 p.m. program in the Senior High auditorium with Sam J. Dunn III serving as master of ceremonies. Contestants will be introduced, followed by musical selections by the Senior High choir and Spanish Immersion third-graders.

Judges will be retired Judge Jeff Payton of Mansfield Municipal Court; Judge Heather Cockley of Domestic Relations Court; Renee Bessick, retired Mansfield City Schools principal; Jean Ruark, communications coordinator, Mansfield/Richland County Public Library, and Carmen Egner, Mansfield City Schools teacher.

Preliminary rounds of the bee will be held in various areas of Senior High. The semi-final and final rounds will be in the auditorium.

Linda Burrage is coordinator of the bee.
