Woodland
Elementary School third-grader McKenzie Musgrove won last year’s inaugural
spelling bee. She received an Amazon Kindle, a trophy and a party for her
class. Eleven
schools will participate in the second annual Mansfield Third-Grade Spelling
Bee on Thursday, Feb. 15, in the Mansfield Senior High School auditorium.
One hundred
and twenty-two students are registered for the bee, sponsored by Mansfield City
Schools and North Central State College.
Participating
schools include Sherman Elementary, Spanish Immersion School, St. Peter’s,
Foundation Academy, Woodland Elementary, Prospect Elementary, Madison South
Elementary, St. Mary’s Parish/School, Mansfield Seventh-Day Adventist Christian
School, Mifflin Elementary and Eastview Elementary.
The bee will
begin with a 2 p.m. program in the Senior High auditorium with Sam J. Dunn III
serving as master of ceremonies. Contestants will be introduced, followed by
musical selections by the Senior High choir and Spanish Immersion third-graders.
Judges will
be retired Judge Jeff Payton of Mansfield Municipal Court; Judge Heather
Cockley of Domestic Relations Court; Renee Bessick, retired Mansfield City
Schools principal; Jean Ruark, communications coordinator, Mansfield/Richland
County Public Library, and Carmen Egner, Mansfield City Schools teacher.
Preliminary
rounds of the bee will be held in various areas of Senior High. The semi-final
and final rounds will be in the auditorium.
